Today I went scouting to find potential homeless to join the Home Sweet Home program. They do this every Saturday at People’s Square. Throughout the day the volunteer staff get to know them, feed them, wash their clothes or give them new ones, offer them showers, get to know what their needs are and how we can help them personally, introduce everyone to each other, play games as a group, worship and basically show them what it’s like to have a community and that there is a God out there who loves them! The head leader of this is someone with a face that has clearly been through a lot, none-the-less he shared how the program has given him community and courage, he explains how this is possible for them too if they want to change!
All in all this hit me hard. My fear of the deformed has become a burning passion for loving them. It’s been a crazy revelation for me getting to know them. A handful of them were young from 17 to 25. They’re not much different from me; only in the end I watch them leave into the streets and I take a cab back to my apartment.
The company is a few years old and definitely has room to grow! This is a business I would definitely want to invest myself into.
